Starting something new always comes with questions — and that’s a good thing. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about training at Union Jiu-Jitsu. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, reach out. We’re always happy to help.
We understand — starting something new can feel intimidating.
That’s why we’ve built Union Jiu-Jitsu differently.
We are:
Ego-free
Non-judgmental
Supportive
Community-driven
Our team includes professionals, students, parents, , first responders, tradespeople, athletes, and complete beginners. Everyone trains together. Everyone supports each other.
You won’t walk into a room full of strangers, you’ll walk into a team!
Absolutely not!
You don’t need to “get in shape” before starting Jiu-Jitsu — that’s what we’re here for. Every single person who walks through our doors starts at a different fitness level, and that’s completely normal.
As you learn technique, your strength, conditioning, and mobility naturally improve. It’s a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like a workout — because you’re too busy learning, problem-solving, and having fun.
All you have to do is show up. We’ll help with the rest.
Not at all!
Many of our members started by saying exactly that.
Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about being the fastest or strongest — it’s about learning technique. And technique can be learned by anyone willing to practice.
Our coaches break movements down step-by-step, and our culture is built on support — not ego. You’ll never feel rushed, embarrassed, or left behind.
You’ll be surprised what you’re capable of.
You do not have to compete to train Jiu-Jitsu.
Most of our members train for fitness, confidence, stress relief, and self-defense. Competition is available for those who want to test themselves — but it’s never mandatory.
As with any physical activity, there is some risk involved. However, we emphasize controlled training, proper technique, and respectful training partners.
Safety and longevity come first.
Our goal is for you to train for years — not weeks.
Yes.
We welcome complete beginners every week. You do not need any prior martial arts experience.
Our fundamentals classes are designed specifically to help new students build a strong foundation in a safe, structured way.
Everyone on our mats was new once — and we remember that.
Keep it simple. For your first class, wear:
Bring:
That’s it!
If you’re starting in a Gi class and don’t have one yet, that's ok! — we’ll loan you one during your trial.
By the end of your first class, don’t be surprised if you’re smiling ear to ear.
Yes — extremely.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was designed to allow a smaller person to defend themselves against a larger opponent using leverage and technique instead of strength.
You’ll learn:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has one of the most respected and challenging belt systems in martial arts — and that’s part of what makes it so meaningful.
White
Blue
Purple
Brown
Black
Each belt includes stripes that recognize consistent progress and development along the way.
For adults training 2–3 times per week, earning a black belt can take 10+ years. That may sound like a long time — but Jiu-Jitsu isn’t designed to be rushed. It’s built to develop skill, patience, resilience, and character over time.
Progress is based on:
Technical ability
Consistency
Effort
Attitude
Time on the mats
Youth students follow a structured belt system designed to recognize growth and development at every stage of their journey.
Promotions are earned — and they mean something.
We often say:
A black belt is just a white belt who didn’t quit.
The goal isn’t just the next belt. The goal is becoming better every time you step on the mats.
