Coach
Dan Davidson began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2016. At the time, he was looking for a physical outlet — something challenging and engaging — but felt he was a little too late to start boxing. Jiu-Jitsu stood out as the martial art that made sense. It was technical, practical, and offered a lifelong path for growth.
With a bit of boxing experience from years ago and some karate in his background, Dan brought a foundation of striking and discipline with him. But it was grappling that truly resonated — the problem-solving, the pace, and the ability to train hard while continuously learning.
On the mats, Dan appreciates the reliability of the Americana and feels most at home in closed guard — positions rooted in control and solid fundamentals.
What Dan loves most about coaching is the learning that happens through teaching. He believes we sharpen our own understanding when we help others grow. He especially enjoys offering newer grapplers the advice and perspective he wishes he had when he first started — helping them avoid common pitfalls and build confidence early in their journey.
He describes his coaching style as flexible, adaptive, and practical. Dan teaches what works, focuses on realistic application, and adjusts his approach based on the individual in front of him.
To anyone nervous about starting, his advice is simple and forward-thinking:
“You’ll thank yourself a year from now if you just set aside your anxiety for a second and get started today.”
For Dan, Union JJ is a safe place — a healthy escape from the stressors of work and the everyday rigamarole of life. It’s where he can reset, focus, and grow alongside teammates who genuinely support one another.
What makes Union different? The coaching team, the culture, and the near-zero ego environment. Everyone is there to improve, and everyone is willing to help. It’s a place where you can get better at Jiu-Jitsu at your own pace — supported every step of the way.
Outside the gym, Dan brings a different kind of rhythm to the community. He plays music for seniors at retirement homes throughout Chatham-Kent — sharing connection and joy beyond the mats.
At Union JJ, Dan represents steady growth, practical learning, and the reminder that it’s never too late to start something that challenges and strengthens you.
