Owner & Head Coach
Joe Thomas began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006. Having been involved in sports his entire life, he was searching for something after university that would keep him competitive, sharp, and physically challenged. Jiu-Jitsu provided exactly that — and quickly became a lifelong pursuit.
Athletics have always been part of Joe’s foundation. His father coached judo at the University of Guelph and informally taught takedowns in their living room growing up. Joe also played university football at Windsor, where he developed the kind of physical awareness and body control that transitions naturally into grappling. That blend of discipline, toughness, and technical curiosity eventually led him to earn his black belt under Professor Kabir Bath of Kaboom BJJ — a milestone that reflects nearly two decades of dedication to the art.
On the mats, Joe keeps things simple and effective. His philosophy? “Whatever works.” While he jokes that closed guard is the only guard, his game is rooted in efficiency, fundamentals, and pressure that stands the test of time.
As Head Coach and Owner, what Joe loves most about coaching is watching people grow. The positive changes he sees in students — not just in their Jiu-Jitsu, but in their confidence, discipline, and lives outside the gym — are what keep him passionate about teaching year after year.
He describes his coaching style as old school, weaponized fundamentals, and systems-based. Joe emphasizes situational rounds with controlled outcomes and believes in teaching systems rather than isolated moves. His approach builds understanding, not just technique — giving students tools they can rely on at every stage of their journey.
To someone nervous about starting, Joe keeps it simple:
“Don’t be scared, just have fun!”
At its core, that’s what training should be — challenging, rewarding, and enjoyable.
For Joe, Union JJ is a place to train hard, grow, and build something meaningful with others. What truly sets Union apart is the environment: arguably one of the nicest-looking facilities around, supported by a team of instructors who each bring their own unique style and perspective to the mats.
As the head of Union JJ, Joe sets the tone — strong fundamentals, high standards, and a culture where people can train seriously while still enjoying the process. It’s a place to sharpen your skills, build resilience, and become better — on and off the mats.
